Episode Transcription

Nic (00:07):

Hey everybody. Welcome back, the Nostalgic Jukebox Podcast. Episode two. We're Going Country. This is some of the songs we definitely sing for our karaoke nights when we're feeling country or we're in a country bar. All right, Vince, how you feeling today?

Vince (00:22):

Oh, hey, I'm feeling good man. I'm ready to talk about some country hits, man, especially these cuz these are three of my faves and I know they're yours

Nic (00:30):

Too. All right. Can you guess this song

Music (00:33):

Blaming All My Roots,

Nic (00:36):

Garth Brooks, friends and Low Places? Geez, that song, that is probably my all time favorite Garth Brook song, especially for karaoke singing.

Vince (00:49):

Oh, transcends Generations, man. And it ask me, it's almost up there with Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond for karaoke song .

Nic (00:58):

That hurts. That hurts cuz I really just hate every Neil Diamond song that ever gets played. The

Vince (01:03):

Karaoke wrong. I love friends in Low Places. I'd rather sing that all night than Sweet Caroline. Just let me make that quite clear.

Nic (01:10):

Garth Brooks Friends in Low Places is one of those ones that if people are in the mood to sing along and sing Anthems, it's pretty much the same as Journey. Those ones, when people just want to sing Anthems at the top of their lungs, friends in little places is one of those ones, especially at a country bar. Oh yeah. Everybody is getting into it.

Vince (01:34):

Oh yeah. Especially at a country bar, you get a bunch of lightly liquid up country fans and they hear those few little notes at the beginning on the guitar area.

Nic (01:45):

Everybody knows the guitar riff. And so a little background of it, it was released in 1990 on Garth album, no Offenses. But what I didn't know is that it was actually recorded by Mark Chestnut originally as it was written by, it wasn't written by Garth, it was written by Earl Budd and Dwayne Blackwell. And so they just kind of gave it out to a couple guys, which is interesting cuz I've listened to the Mark Chestnut version and it's lyrically the same song. But I think the way it's put together, the Garth Brooks version, I think it's cleaner. And so I can see kind of why it took off a little bit more than Mark Chestnuts

Vince (02:34):

One than the Chestnut version. Yeah, I like the Chestnut version actually. It's a little,

Nic (02:38):

It's twangy

Vince (02:39):

More subdued.

Nic (02:40):

It's twangy.

Vince (02:40):

Yeah, it's twangy, but

Nic (02:43):

It definitely has the solid country vibes. Yeah. Which is friends. But it's just interesting that I've never really heard that one played pretty much ever. So I didn't even know it existed. You

Vince (02:57):

And me both, man. I just heard it for the first time, time just recently myself.

Nic (03:00):

Yeah. So definitely I don't think Vince, have you ever sang Friends in Low Places?

Vince (03:06):

I have. Long time ago. I think that was one of my very first karaoke songs that I got the nerve enough to go up there and sing and it went over well. I remember D doing it and it went over well. And I know that's one of your faves, so every now and then I'll pull it out if you're not around. But

Nic (03:30):

Yeah, I just feel like it's one of those, it's very a comfortable song sing. I mean I've heard, I've been a Garth Brooks fan for damn Near Forever, so it's one of those ones that I have the entire song memorized. So once it's plain you can just vibe out and not really worry about looking at the lyrics or whatever. You just enjoy being in this song and the moment with the crowd. So part's a lot of fun.

Vince (03:59):

Yeah, and it's, it is an song to karaoke, especially with the lyrics. If you have the, I'm assuming you have the lyrics shown for you and it's a breeze, I mean, to get through. And when you have the whole bar singing with you even better , it even goes smoother.

Nic (04:16):

And especially those, so there's that secret third verse that he only does live and a few times is a country, there's a karaoke version of it that includes the third verse, but you know, never really heard. The third verse isn't really anywhere. So it's not that you can practice it, practice it. And so it's just every once in a while you get thrown off. You're like, oh yeah. Cause I think when you Google the lyrics, the third verse is kind of somewhere on there too every once in a while. So it's just one of those ones where just when you karaoke, you just make it. Sometimes they ask you to point the third verse or not and I usually go no third verse because it's need to make the song any longer. Yeah. But two thirds of the way through everybody's kind of done. Cuz it's a lot of the ending just rep

Vince (05:05):

It's

Nic (05:05):

Repetitive. Yeah, repetitive.

Vince (05:07):

You sing the chorus a lot. Yeah. And you realize this when you're karaoke and going, whoa, I didn't realize they did the chorus so much. But no, it's a fun song though. And definitely a fave.

Nic (05:22):

Yeah, I pretty much everywhere you go, I think you'd sing that song pretty much everywhere. I mean I pretty much, I've sang it everywhere. Oh

Vince (05:29):

Yeah, no, you have. Yeah, I don't care.

Nic (05:31):

I enjoy that song. It's a little slow, which is, but again, I think it's Journey and it's Neil Diamond and kind of those types of songs that I think even though it's a slower song, people still enjoy singing it with everybody

Vince (05:45):

Sing along with, yeah. Yeah. Journey's a little harder. Don't Stop Believing. That's another one that gets people going. Yeah. But yeah, it's a little faster and you have to know how to sing well for that song.

Nic (05:56):

Yeah. Luckily for Country Low and Slow is my methodology in it. It goes over pretty well because you can't, a lot easier to do pitch control when you know, sing weight down deep. But when you get super high and then people, you're kind of off. It's a lot easier to tell.

Vince (06:13):

Yeah, it is a lot easier to tell. And that low voice of yours sometimes it comes across really well, especially with the ladies. So yeah, you got a great voice everybody. The

Nic (06:24):

Silky smooth

Vince (06:26):

Tones. Yeah.

Nic (06:28):

Well great. Thanks. Bringing that up. All right, here's an upbeat alternative to Friends of All Places

Music (06:38):

Ain't Going Down Till the Sun comes.

Nic (06:46):

That's right. Ain't going Down Till the Sun Comes up Dark Brooks from his album in Pieces, which hi album in pieces, his artwork and his, he wore that shirt almost every concert he did was that

Vince (07:01):

Checkered board.

Nic (07:02):

Checkered board, red and Black with his black cowboy hat. That was like, I think if you picture Garth Brooks in your head, that's the image that you get for sure from 93. Cause that was his heyday because before that you had the song the summer and then after this one he had American Honking Tonk Bar Association. So he was definitely in full swing. It was full Garth mode for sure.

Vince (07:28):

Man, that shirt was everywhere too, man. I know what shirt you're talking about and it's just, it all the country clubs you go out to the country clubs, you at least saw five or six guys wearing the same shirt during this time.

Nic (07:41):

I wanna find it now. I mean that would be mean. Imagine going out to your karaoke night in your full country in full Garth gear. Geez,

Vince (07:50):

We may have to do that challenge one of these nights.

Nic (07:53):

Yeah man, that would be some fucked up. You get some looks for sure. But if you're only, cause we, we've gone on, we've sang the entire Garth Brooks.

Vince (08:02):

Yeah, his catalog. His catalog one night. Yeah,

Nic (08:05):

That was fun. So if we came in with our country Garth Brooks outfits and just decided we're just going to sing all Garth Brooks songs just half the time nobody can get mad at you cuz you're, you fully committed from when you got there to when you left. It was all Garth Brooks. And like I said, we were talking to him about few of the songs that we like, but he has so many songs that we have. We've done an entire night of singing Garth Brooks songs.

Vince (08:33):

Oh yeah, yeah. Big time. But this is one of my faves. I mean this one's in my at least top 10, top 15 songs I like to sing. And yeah, it just gets people going. It's fast paced, you gotta know the song. But yeah, this definitely is one that gets people going if you can sing it well, but again, it's karaoke. You just go up there, everyone's going to help you out. There's going to be a lot of people that know this song. Yeah. Especially if you get a really good country crowd. This is a banger man. Ooh wee.

Nic (09:09):

I like this one. I have not tried to sing. Vince Can do it. Well this one just is a little fast in the middle parts where he's kind of just railing off everything and just going to town it really reminds me of Billy Joel. We didn't start the fire.

Vince (09:27):

I dunno if it's that bad.

Nic (09:28):

I mean it's not that bad, but it reminds me, it's a very list centric of things that he's just listing off. It just go, go, go, go, go. So if you get behind you're kind of just fall on your face. So you just have to pick yourself back up and just skip a stance and stuff and then come back. So it just reminds me of definitely of that kind of, I feel that's another, you have to be in the mood to sing this fast pace of a song because if you can't bring the energy and you're not really into it, then again, you'll kind of just not do the song justice. And everybody will kind of know.

Vince (10:05):

Right. Yeah, it'll translate. The audience is going to know it. But yeah, great song. Hey again, you just gotta know it. Go up there. And if a good reader and you can read the lyrics pretty fast. I mean, yeah, you, you'll be fine with it, but it takes some practice.

Nic (10:23):

I don't think as many people sing this one as an anthem as friends in little places

Vince (10:29):

Though. Oh no, no, no. The Friends in Low Places is definitely the song when it comes to a karaoke. This one's just an offshoot. And like you said, it's almost up in the realm of another song that we might be touching on here in a little bit. But we'll get there.

Nic (10:47):

But this one actually was written by Garth and a couple other people, so he started obviously writing his own tracks and coming up some good songs too. So I think a lot of people know, he writes a lot of his songs, but there's all some songs he doesn't write or he co-writes.

Vince (10:59):

Yeah. And this album had so many hits on it too. I mean, standing outside the Fire mean, what was the other one? Colin Baton Rouge. I mean that's another one. Awesome. It's a little faster, but that's another karaoke fave.

Nic (11:13):

Yeah, this was number one in the us. Number one in Canada at 30 in Europe

Vince (11:19):

On the country

Nic (11:20):

Charts, on the country charts, the UK singles. It was like 13. So it did really well all across the globe for sure. All right. How about this one? Does this one ring a bell for you, Vince?

Vince (11:43):

A little bit of a,

Nic (11:45):

Yeah, if you're looking for a two minute song to sing, that's Country the thing. Nothing's better than Sold. The Graney County Auction Incident by John Montgomery. This this song is probably my favorite karaoke song in general. Oh definitely. Of all the songs that I've ever sang, definitely this one is the best cuz it's two minutes and 30 seconds long. It's upbeat, it's fast, and it is just all around a fun song. But Vince actually sang it before I did and I stole it

Vince (12:21):

From you. Oh yeah, this is the Fame man. This is another one that you have to know pretty well to do because it is just two minutes and 30 seconds of just straight Happiness. Yeah, it's a great song and

Nic (12:36):

It definitely breath control because he kind of goes on a long runs for a couple of 'em. But it is a lot of fun to sing. And this one came out in 95 and was number one and Canada and us. And I guess it's just one of those ones that you sing it and if people are country music fans then they've heard this song before.

Vince (12:59):

Oh yeah. Oh yeah. I mean this is one of the classics from way back and it's not way back 95. That's

Nic (13:05):

Way back still.

Vince (13:06):

It is way back now. I mean I'm

Nic (13:09):

Some time,

Vince (13:09):

Yes it is some time, but still, I mean this is one again, that transcends generations and once people hear and if they, they've never heard it before, they enjoy it. I mean, Nick has done this karaoke a few times and a lot of people have come up to 'em afterwards going, I, I've heard this, I thought I knew this song, but you did it so well. And just, yeah, it's one of those feel good songs that a lot of people can get into.

Nic (13:38):

I think people realize when you're singing it, how it's kind of difficult if you don't know the lyrics because it just goes very fast. And so you can kind of impress on people if you can sing it fast. But yeah, Vince doesn't mildly that I've done this song a few times, so probably do this song. I don't wanna say every time now we go out cuz we just do a bunch of different songs. But it's definitely one of those ones that, again, if I go to a new place and I'm trying to feel out the crowd, I'll just do this one cuz it's short and if people are kind of into country then I'll kind of do more stuff. But yeah, it's definitely been full rotation for sure.

Vince (14:18):

Oh yeah. And like I said, mean we were speaking about Ain't Going Down Garth Brooks, the last song and On Point with that, the lyrics, I mean it's pretty fast. I mean ain't going down a little longer, but yeah, like you said, two minutes, 30 seconds you get this song down and it's a karaoke gem so to speak.

Nic (14:42):

Yeah, I don't think so. None of these other than so hardcore Garth Brooks fan, probably since I was probably 10, but most of the time I was going with family and going camping with my parents and I never really got into country through my teen years cuz I was more of pop r and b, hip hop very defiant towards family. My dad was listening to Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel and I'm throwing tag team in the house and

Vince (15:20):

Richard Classics, don't get us wrong, Richard's still classics, but we'll

Nic (15:24):

Get there. So I think once I got out of those years and then started college and then branched out to more music than I remembered how much country was fun. And so you can just be able to pick up different musics and stuff. So they're nostalgic to the past that I remember them as a kid. But more now is where I think country is making a comeback to the classics or again, classics. And everybody's kind of enjoys those. And the newer country songs, they take some of these songs and then they kind of just make them their own. Okay. Because I think what we discussed, so one too many by Luke Combs, which is another song that a karaoke sing is reminiscent of an going down because he kind of wrote it to be similar in that style. And so it's kind of fun. We see older songs from the nineties and then newer songs from the 2022 have very same tempos and cadence and song lyrics and it makes it kind of

Vince (16:25):

Fun. Oh yeah. Just homage to the classics now.

Nic (16:30):

All these songs are just very fun. It really gets that car out going and they're anthems in their selves and just a take of how we hang out and how we take the vibe that we're at the bar and make our karaoke experience kind of match what that is.

Vince (16:52):

And just to go off what you were saying a little earlier about growing up and when you started getting into country, I mean my country phase started in the mid nineties so it was a little after all this stuff started coming out, but you still, all these songs were in heavy rotation on the radios and then the clubs started hanging out at some country clubs with some friends and Oh, did we play the part? Let me you I'm really hoping all those pictures are burned and there's no more pictures to be found of those days. But clubs like the Saddle Rack in the Bay Area, that was the club to go to for country back then and yeah.

Nic (17:37):

Yeah, it closed down. Yeah. Yeah. Got it. But it's so fun to see other country bars have kind of popped up and propagated and Oh yeah. Are doing well.

Vince (17:45):

Oh, like you were saying, it's making a comeback. It goes through its cycles, but country's always going to be, especially nowadays, a lot of this country is a rap country hybrid, a lot of the songs. So it's appealing to a lot bigger audience of both genres. So

Nic (18:03):

Yeah, it's pretty popular. Not

Vince (18:04):

Too, yeah, it's pretty popular, but it's fun. I mean, a lot of the songs are really good, so I enjoy it. And again, these three songs are just classics that are still either referred to these days or again, remade in a different style, but these new artists pay homage to these classic country songs.

Nic (18:31):

All right, everybody. Well, we appreciate you coming down the country road with us as we discuss a couple of our songs, sold, friends little places and Ain't Going Down until The Sun comes up. Just some of the songs we enjoy karaoke singing, but also just enjoy 'em in general. I sing these songs in my car by myself. So I'll see you next week.
